Forest School
The first activity of October half term was a visit to the woods with Humber Forest School. During their time in the woods, the children challenged themselves in many different activities, but most notably, they built a bridge to connect two parts of the forest. Working together, they planned, measured, and constructed their bridge, overcoming obstacles and celebrating their achievement. Despite not quite finishing the bridge, the children were pleased with what they had achieved and despite the many obstacles, they managed to get the bridge to stay upright!
It was also brilliant to see the children’s individual talents and imaginations flourish as soon of the children engaged in wood carving, transforming pieces of wood into fantastical creatures. They honed their fine motor skills and expressed their individuality through their unique creations.
Maker Space
Another group of children had a great time at Maker Space, where they enjoyed a range of creative activities inspired by Halloween. The children created Halloween mummies by wrapping layers of cloth, using glue, and natural dyes. They also created a spooky box filled with eerie fingers and brains, crafted from plaster of Paris.
To finish off the session, the children squeezed themselves into jars, pretending to be trapped.
Terrarium and Cook Stars
The final experience of the week was a terrarium building workshop and cooking class. The children learnt all about how to care for a terrarium and made their own miniature jungle. Some children brought something special to put into their terrariums and the end results were fantastic. They then moved onto a Halloween themed cooking class – they made a mixture of sweet and savoury delicious snacks whilst learning a variety of techniques and building confidence with cooking.
