We have had a super busy half term with the Step Up Move On students last week with a variety of University of Hull and Industry Careers Day experiences:
Monday
A fantastic group of our Year 9s had an incredible experience at DoubleTree by Hilton in Hull City Centre learning all about careers in the hospitality industry. They discovered how to make beds in housekeeping; set and clear tables correctly for big events; explored allergens in food and became mixologists creating their own mocktails. We were treated to a behind the scenes look at how a busy hotel works! Thank you to Andy Craggs and Samantha Dunion for hosting and organising such an educational and inspiring visit. Our young people came away with a greater understanding and appreciation of career opportunities in hotels.
Tuesday
Our Year 8s learned about careers in creative arts on their Step Up Move On experience when they visited the University of Hull. Thank you to Ed Grimoldby from GrimVisions for an illuminating introduction to digital projection in theatre and entertainment! The young people were encouraged to participate in poi dancing and created their own performance for their adults. What a fantastic workshop! The young people were inspired by the different roles in sound, lighting and performance. Despite some insecurities at the beginning, every single person participated and worked as a team to create something wonderful!
Wednesday
‘A Day in the Life of a University student’ was our focus for our Year 11 Step Up Move On students this week. Thank you to the University of Hull for your support in hosting a variety of activities including a tour of the Medical Centre, an exclusive look at the law courts, a peek at the Student Accommodation and a Cook Stars cooking on a budget session in the student kitchens! A truly inspiring visit which allowed the young people to truly imagine themselves living and learning on campus.
Thursday
Another superb day with Jayne Haigh at Goxhill Meadows. We took the Year 10 students to start their ASDAN certificate in Animal Care. The difference in the young people from the beginning of the day to the end was so uplifting. Anxiety at 9.30 am transformed to confidence by 3pm. It was an incredible day with a lovely bunch of teenagers who described their day as ‘calming’ and ‘fun’! What a great result and the beginning of a qualification they will also be able to use for college applications and CVs.
