LEL Blog: HEYCU in the Holidays (Part 2)

Following on from the successful start to our HEY CU in the Holidays trips, we continued into the summer with another three exciting trips. After the success of the first three weeks we couldn’t wait to carry on and have more fun throughout the holidays.

Week four saw us head into Hall Road Academy, who kindly allowed us the use of their hall to hold a session with Sarah from Cook Stars. Cook Stars is a great way to teach the children about food preparation and what goes into the food we eat. We started by making calzones: each child made their own pastry and rolled it out before deciding what filling they would like to include. These were then popped into the oven to cook whilst we made our puddings, consisting of a sponge filling with sauce, custard and as much fruit as we could cram into the pot! This element went down extremely well! After our delicious meal, we enjoyed a rigorous game of dodgeball rounders at which point the parents and carers of the children had come to join in.

For the fifth week, we headed north towards Market Weighton to take part in Forest School. We handled the chickens before releasing the sheep and working as a team to feed them and herd them back into the field. Fortunately, the rain failed to dampen our spirits and each child made a flower canvas and wheat dolly to take home.

The final trip of our summer was held at Welton Waters. We spent the morning playing teams games on land, however the holes in our buckets meant we all got absolutely soaked! After lunch, we jumped into the kayaks and headed out onto the lake. After building a bridge between the kayaks, we tested our nerve by crossing into the opposite boats. Most made it across dry but unfortunately the unsteadiness of the bridge meant that not everybody was successful. We rounded the holidays off with a jetty dive into the lake before changing and heading home.

As always it was great to spend time with this group and watch their personalities come through each week. Thank you to Healthy Holidays for helping us to provide a summer of great memories that will last a lifetime.
